One of the marquee matchups on Thursday evening was a game that was postponed due to the weather on Tuesday, between Elizabeth and Union Catholic in the Wheelie Good Pierogi Union County Game Of The Week.

Both teams came out playing tough defense, but it was UC who jumped out to an early 9-4 lead behind a balanced attack, which saw 4 of the starters score. Elizabeth fought back in the last minute as London Carson scored 6 points to tie the score at the end of the first quarter even up at 9-9.

The second quarter saw the pace quicken and Elizabeth went ahead on two deep three point shots by junior guard Cam McRae. Elizabeth led 18-11 midway through the second. Union Catholic benefitted from two turnovers by AJ Altobelli and they were converted into 5 points in transition by Elijah Peters. Elizabeth answered the bell to end the half with an offensive rebound by sophomore Kareem Anthony as Phil Colicchio’s Minutemen led 25-21 at the break.

Elizabeth came out quickly in the third led by JoJo Torres with 2 quick baskets as Elizabeth took a 10 point lead and Coach Jim Regan called a time out with Elizabeth leading 31-21. Elizabeth held on to the lead throughout the quarter before Luke Schorr hit a deep three pointer and Union Catholic gamely fought back to make the score 34-31. Highly regarded freshman guard Jayden Johnson scored the final 8 points of the quarter with two three point shots from the top of the key and two free throws to extend the Elizabeth lead back to double digits, at 42-31 at the end of three.

The Fourth Quarter saw a seesaw battle as Union Catholic chipped away at the Elizabeth lead. Luke Schorr led the charge with a deep three pointer a layup and two free throws as Union Catholic cut the Elizabeth lead to 49-45 with three minutes left. Just like he did in the Linden game a week ago, London Carson took over down the stretch. The 6'4" senior guard scored 12 points in the last three minutes with a deep three and went 7 for 8 from the charity stripe as Union catholic was forced to foul towards the final buzzer. Carson sealed the game on the line and Elizabeth won 58-47.
