Union County Semifinal Recap

GSBR stopped off at Kean University in Union this evening for the doubleheader in the Union County Tournament, with coverage courtesy of Wheelie Good Pierogi, Located at 1580 Irving Street in Rahway

The opening contest saw Union Catholic outlast Cranford in a game of cat-and-mouse. The Vikings had a hot first quarter, jumping out to a 12-0 lead before Cranford started to claw their way back into the game. The second quarter tipped the scales in favor of Cranford, but in spite of their 20 point quarter, they trailed 28-25 as the teams went to the lockers.

Yaw Ansong had a strong game in the post and led the Vikes with 19 points on the night and AJ Altobelli added 13 as the Vikings staved off several Cranford runs and forced some bad shots out of the Cougars late in the contest to advance to the county final with a 68-62 victory.

While UC won the day, the most impressive player of the game and of the tournament was on display in 6'6" Cranford senior Nick Amitie. He had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists to keep the Cougars within striking distance.

In the nightcap, Roselle Catholic continued to make its case for being the top team in the county with a dominant performance against Elizabeth. The Lions jumped out to a 23 point first quarter and never looked back. While Elizabeth got the game under ten points several times in the second half, RC was always able to put the pedal back to the floor and pull away. Sophomore guard Jalen Grant led RC with 24 and Eric Hillsman added a double-double at 15&10 as the Lions cruised to a 69-53 victory. 6'5" Elizabeth junior forward JoJo Torres had 19 in the loss.

The Union County Final will be played on Sunday at 4PM between the two Watchung Conference rivals and GSBR will be in attendance for the contest.
